The 'New German Gems' 6-pack
Those who visited Empire State South last year for our tasting menu with wine pairings might remember me prattling on and on about Pinot producer Enderle & Moll when I poured you their unusual, beloved, and starkly delicious ‘Weiss & Grau’ bottling. I went through cases and cases of that wine simply because people had to take a bottle home with them after tasting it. Once in a while, you see a wine that sparks a response like that.
This week, I want to offer you the newest vintage of that wine along with Enderle & Moll’s true claim-to-fame, the 'Liason’ Pinot Noir. Florian Moll and Manfred Enderle have been called the finest Pinot producer in Germany, and this wine will show you why. Also in the pack is another German gem to demonstrate how epic, dry, and fiercely refreshing the modern version of German Riesling has become. Forget everything you thought you knew about Riesling. The ‘Mineral’ by Emrich Schönleber is a precise, serious wine that deserves a spot on your dinner table.
All three wines are brought to the USA by Stephen Bitterolf of Vom Boden, a very special boutique importer driving a revolution in what we know about Germany (partly by making German wine fun).
You’ll get two bottles of each and a lesson on the wines:
Riesling Trocken, Emrich Schönleber, ‘Mineral’, Nahe, Germany, 2021
A bone-dry, exceedingly crisp style of Riesling coming from young vines in Schönleber’s Grand Cru vineyard sites that showcases the rocky complexity of their soils.
‘Weiss & Grau’, Enderle & Moll, Baden, Germany, 2022
Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris fermented with 5 days of skin contact to give it a brassy color and some totally exotic aromatics. A spectacular, addictive food wine, it also serves as an outstanding casual drink.
Pinot Noir, Enderle & Moll, ‘Liason’, Baden, Germany, 2021
Although they make several Pinots—including a range of Grand Cru-specific wines— this is the bottle that keeps turning heads because of its honest accessibility. It uses fruit from all of their Grand Cru sites and has Burgundian elegance with a tremendous amount of soul. —SG
Orders for ‘New German Gems’ 6-pack will be available for pickup starting Friday, October 6th.
